ALL WE SAW THE FIRST SUNRISE FROM SPACE.
MISSION COMPLETE REPORT
2020.12.31 - 2021.1.1
The night of New Year's Eve 2020.
We delivered the New Year's Eve LIVE program to share a moment to celebrate the beginning of a New Year in Space from the Space Studio of the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" in the International Space Station (ISS). We challenged to create new entertainment from Space and succeeded in the mission.
This is the second time of a two-way live streaming program that connects the ISS and the ground. In addition to the joint business demonstration activities with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), Bascule Inc. has conducted new technology and content demonstration experiments as a space media business in collaboration with three new companies as demonstration partners.
Please check the press release for more details.

[WORLD'S FIRST] Real-time two-way communication that connects Space and various places of the Earth.
(Demonstration partner : Twitter Japan)
Video-based communication has been achieved between astronauts on ISS and people on Earth by using the KIBO system that connects Space and the ground in both directions. We collected questions toward to JAXA Astronaut Soichi Noguchi via Twitter and he answered various questions that were shown on the display inside the Kibo module. In addition, Marie Kondo (Konmari) appeared live from Los Angeles on the display in the module, asked Astronaut Noguchi about how to clean up in the ISS.Until now, astronauts could only talk to people on the ground by voice. We succeeded in having a face-to-face conversation while checking the state of people on the ground for the first time by using the KIBO system.By implementing communication plans in advance utilizing the Twitter platform, we were able to provide a new experience of communication that brings Space more familiar to many audience.
Donation “#KIBO Project”Tweet Conversation Interview
The world's first attempt for astronauts to interact in real-time while watching live images of their communication partners.
KIBO tweets (wishes and hopes) from the ground that collected in advance were projected into space.
"Tweet Rush", which shows real-time tweets from the ground on top of the real-time Earth video captured from the ISS.
  • Improved image quality by reviewing the live video communication method from the first distribution to deliver high-quality images of people on the ground to Space.
  • Installation of a new camera to simultaneously show onboard astronauts from "Kibo" module and a display that showed people on the ground.

[WORLD'S FIRST] Real-time AR content set in Space
(Demonstration partner :
The Pokémon Company)
A collaboration between Pokemon and real-time Earth images received from the ISS. We have succeeded in delivering a new form of entertainment from outer space.Developed the "Earth AR" system that realizes AR expression by superimposing the real-time Earth image captured by the ISS outboard camera and the virtual 3D Earth. Applied it for various contents in the program such as displaying the country names on the real-time Earth video seen from the ISS, and the world's first AR Space Commercial set in real-time Earth and Space, etc.
Pokemon also appeared in the module of "Kibo". This Pokemon "KIBO Pikachu" was given to players all over the world who are enjoying Pokemon with Nintendo Switch.
The country name is plotted on the real-time video of the Earth captured by the outboard camera.
Challenged the world's first real-time AR Space Commercial set in Space.

[WORLD'S FIRST] THE FIRST SPACE SUNRISE LIVE 2021
All we successfully saw the first sunrise of 2021 (JST) from the ISS in real-time with the audience from the Earth together. Through the first sunrise and the New Year's Eve countdown from Space, we were able to take a small step toward creating a completely new global event with the theme of Space. The timeline of the program simulated the orbit of the ISS, which makes one round and a half around the Earth in 120 minutes. We had plotted contents on an appropriate timeline, taking into consideration the day and night region of the Earth and the timing of communication interruption. We concluded the program with "Welcome To The Earth". It is a content to celebrate and welcome new life born babies on the Earth as we are seniors of the Earth. We collected movies of babies born in 2020 in advance, and projected them on a display placed next to a round window in Kibo overlooking the earth along with music composed by Akiko Yano and written by Shigesato Itoi.
A program timeline that incorporates a wide variety of Space Live Entertainment in line with the orbit of the ISS, which orbits the Earth about one and a half round in 120 minutes.
Astronaut Noguchi was in charge of all the operations of the Space studio, from the setup of shooting equipment and displays to the appearance.
SSEE YOU ON THE NEXT MISSION
